This course further students' understanding of the processes that occur in biological systems. Students will study theory and conduct investigations in the areas of the structure and function of animals, anatomy, growth and function of plants, biodiversity, genetics processes and evolution theories. The course focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study and helps students engage further curiosity and skills related to scientific investigation.
big ideas
Anatomy and Physiology Groups of organs with specific structures and functions work together as systems, which interact with other systems in the body to maintain homeostasis. The development and uses of technology to maintain human health have social and ethical implications.
Genetics Genetics and genomic research can have social and environmental implications. Variability and diversity of living organisms results from the distribution of genetic materials during the process of meiosis.
Evolution Evolutionis the process of biological change over time based on the relationship between species and their evironments. The theory of evolution is a scientific explanation based on a large accumulation of evidence. Technology enables humans to manipulate the development of species and has economic and environmental implications.
Biodiversity All living things can be classified according to their anatomical and physical characteristics. Human activities affect the diversity of living things in an ecosystem. Diversity is represented by six different kingdoms.
The World of Plants Plants have specialized structures with distinct functions that enable them to respond and adapt to the environment. Plant biodiversity is critical to the survival and sustainability of ecosystems.
student expectations
Respect, responsibility and compassion. These are the three elements that govern our behaviour, our actions and ultimately success not only in our classroom but here at ODSS as well. Attendance is positively correlated with students success, which is correlated with responsibility for assessments being handed in on time. Ultimately extenuating circumstances do occur and will be considered on a case by case basis. If a student must be absent for a summative assessment, prior notice must be given or a written note provided upon their return in addition to completing the assessment at that time. Please see Course Outlinefor further details.
